I created vessels, or encasings, to contain various antique garments and textiles. The encasings provide a space for the artifacts to move and fall on the body, while simultaneously eroding them allowing the viewers to witness the artifacts' life.
My research began with a house in Dickerson County, Maryland. The family that lives there lost their mother three years prior. She was believed to be poisoned by an incinerator located one mile away from their home. The house was perfectly preserved as she had left it. In the summer of 2022, my childhood home caught on fire. Our belongings were shipped to a warehouse specializing in smoke damage and were sent back to us wrapped in plastic. Though these two situations are on a completely different scale, the duality of the two methods of preservation, excavating a site versus leaving it to decay - is what inspires my work. In public space, these two methods come to a junction, are combined and work together throughout time, forming a palimpsest. The original preserved artifacts are transformed into something entirely different. Left is a framed palimpsest.
